Overview

Kamakura is Boundless Life's Japanese location — a seaside community south of Tokyo often called the "Kyoto of Eastern Japan." The city blends surfers, artisans, Buddhist monks, and families in a setting that is safe, clean, and brimming with cultural experiences. Ancient temples sit among forested hills that slope down to surf beaches, creating a unique environment where spirituality, nature, and coastal living intersect.

Kamakura is connected to Tokyo via the JR Yokosuka Line, making the capital accessible for day trips, while the scenic Enoden railway provides charming local transport along the coast. This is one of the newer additions to the Boundless Life network — it launched as a Boundless location in early 2026 (see "Boundless Life in Kamakura: Launch Details" below).

Kamakura has an established international community, though it is smaller and more integrated than Bali's large expat scene.   • Visas: Many nationalities receive 90-day visa-free entry to Japan. Some countries have different arrangements. Check current requirements as Japan's visa policies have evolved in recent years.
  • Safety: Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime is extremely low. Children enjoy a level of independence here that is rare elsewhere — it is common to see Japanese children commuting to school alone from a young age.
  • Internet: Japan has excellent, fast internet infrastructure.
  • Transportation: The JR Yokosuka Line connects Kamakura to Tokyo (approximately 1 hour). The Enoden Line is a scenic coastal railway running through the Kamakura area. Buses and cycling are practical for local transport.
