Overview

ReCreation Nation is a family experience center in the Ardeche region of southern France, housed in a former silk factory that has been transformed into a boho-inspired haven. Described as "a slice of Berlin teleported to a serene river valley," the center blends festival spirit with retreat tranquility to create a space where families can reconnect with nature, community, and the joy of learning.

The project was founded by a family who traveled and learned with their own children globally before putting down roots in the Ardeche. Their firsthand worldschooling experience informs every aspect of ReCreation Nation's design — from the screen-free philosophy to the emphasis on families as creators rather than consumers.

ReCreation Nation is in its first year of operation, making it a ground-floor opportunity for families who want to be part of something new and deeply intentional. Applications opened in May 2025.

Locations & Dates

Address: Le Sablas, Saint-Etienne-de-Serre, France, 07290.

The center is situated in the Ardeche, a region in southern France known for its dramatic gorges, limestone caves, and unspoiled natural beauty. The river valley setting provides a serene backdrop far removed from urban noise.

As a first-year operation, families should check directly with ReCreation Nation for current season dates and availability. The center is designed to accommodate both long-term stays for worldschooling families and shorter summer holiday visits.

Ages & Format

ReCreation Nation offers programming across multiple formats designed for all ages:

Kids Nature Club

Full-day and half-day options led by experienced, award-winning educationalists. The approach is creative and child-centred, prioritizing exploration and discovery over rigid curricula. Staff are described as having an "innate ability for working with young children."

Ikigai Teen Camp

Teenagers stay in a bell tent village and shadow resident artisan makers in an apprenticeship model. This gives older children meaningful, skill-based experiences rather than watered-down adult programming or glorified babysitting. The name references the Japanese concept of ikigai — finding purpose through the intersection of passion, skill, mission, and vocation.

Empowering Workshops (All Ages)

Open to the entire family, workshops cover natural cooking, permaculture, yoga, and music. These are designed to be participatory and skill-building rather than passive.

Additional Offerings

  • Naturally Delicious Food: Whole food with clean ingredients, available communally or privately. Meals are part of the experience rather than an afterthought.
  • Screen-Free Zones: A shared mission across the community — "village beats the screen." Families come here specifically to break the pull of devices.
  • Festival-Inspired Evenings: Theatre, live music, campfire feasts, and wood-fired pizza create a sense of celebration and community after the day's learning is done.
  • Co-working Space: For parents who need to work remotely while their children are in programming.

What Families Say

Early reviews and descriptions from the founding team and visiting families paint a vivid picture:

  • "Amazingly creative, eternally patient, daringly adventurous" — the team is praised for bringing genuine energy and imagination to every interaction.
  • "Kids excited to show what they'd been doing" — parents report that children return from programming bursting with enthusiasm to share their creations and discoveries.
  • "Staff have innate ability for working with young children" — the educational team is highlighted as a core strength, with natural rapport and deep experience.

The overall atmosphere is one of joyful intention — not a polished resort experience, but something warmer and more real.

Compared To

ReCreation Nation occupies a distinctive space in the worldschooling landscape. It is not a structured school or academic program — families seeking curriculum continuity or formal instruction should look elsewhere. Instead, it is a community-and-creativity-first experience that happens to include excellent children's programming.

Compared to worldschooling hubs in tropical destinations (Costa Rica, Bali, Mexico), ReCreation Nation offers a European alternative with a distinctly artistic, festival-culture sensibility. The Ardeche location means cooler weather, different outdoor activities (river gorges, limestone landscapes), and proximity to the rest of Europe for onward travel.

Compared to family coworking or coliving spaces, ReCreation Nation goes further with its dedicated children's programming, teen apprenticeships, and screen-free philosophy. It is designed for families who want more than a workspace with childcare attached.

How to Apply

Applications opened in May 2025 through the ReCreation Nation website. Because this is a first-year operation with limited capacity, early inquiry is recommended. The center is also actively seeking volunteers in the areas of cooking, gardening, maintenance, DIY, and education — so families with skills to contribute may find additional pathways to participate.
